Chapter Fourteen

Amabala’s portal deposited us in the room, the space feeling as alienating as it had been welcoming, and the only reason we stayed in it as long as we did was due to the fact that a certain cat had a hard on for all the soda in the fridge that had been provided.

She turned to glare at me as she sauntered back with her inventory full to bursting. You’re just jealous that I can handle more caffeine than you.

I’m just jealous that your inventory seems bottomless in comparison to mine. My retort just made her snort and roll her eyes.

We can work on that, but for now, let us focus on the task ahead. Now it was my turn to roll my eyes. I have plotted the sites of the attacks and murders; would you like to split up or take them as a team?

I grunted, then paused. Merlin, go with Amabala to the Heart of the City here and see what you can find out as a Warden. Keep Galaxy in mind as well.

Galaxy passed my orders to him and he nodded, motioning that Amabala follow him. And be careful! We don’t know what this thing is so if you see something, run, I don’t care if you leave the rest of us stranded for a bit.

Galaxy told them both that and though Merlin seemed okay with it, Amabala looked like she wanted to say something about it. I shook my head, pointing to my ears and motioning to the room. She grimaced and put her human form on to go out into the world with Merlin.

She does not like the idea of leaving you all here. Galaxy’s words bounced off my mind; I didn’t care about that. She was our expedient ticket home and she was one of my people now. I couldn’t have either of them in danger needlessly.

Suddenly Amabala stopped and glanced back over her shoulder, then grinned at me and flounced off with the young mage, seemingly in better spirits.

A mental nod from Galaxy let me know that she had passed the sentiment on and the gauge over her shoulder had gone from Interested to Trusted.

I blinked to myself. When had she become interested?

Shortly after you kept her safe during the landing is when she became interested, but it was during the fight with the demon dogs that her bond read as such.

I nodded to myself. It made sense and tracked for me. The rest of us would be okay on our own, but it would be easier to go and look at them in pairs as well.

Galaxy, can you pass along to Arden and Cassia that they should go and take one of the other sites themselves?

Both women looked at me and their eyes narrowed at me. I mouthed outside and they nodded once and turned to walk away and into the elevator.

The attendant took us in politely. “Where to?”

I grinned at him. “Lobby, please.”

He pressed the button with the star on it that was lowest on the wall and smiled pleasantly at the wall opposite him past us.
